Shirin Neshat is an Iranian visual artist living in New York City, known primarily for her work in film, video and photography. Her work focuses on the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public and private life, ancient and modern times, and connecting the spaces between these subjects. Since Iran has violated basic human rights, especially since the Islamic Revolution, she said that she "is aiming to create an art that involves authoritarianism. financial power, oppression and political injustice.
