Henry Lewis Stimson is an American politician, lawyer and Republican politician. Throughout his long career, he has become a leading figure in American foreign policy, serving in both Republican and Democratic governments. He was Secretary of War under President William Howard Taft, Secretary of State under President Herbert Hoover, and Secretary of War under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. The son of surgeon Lewis Atterbury Stimson, Stimson became a Wall Street attorney after graduating from Harvard Law School. He was a lawyer in the United States under President Theodore Roosevelt and pursued a number of antitrust lawsuits. After being defeated in the New York gubernatorial election in 1910, Stimson served as Secretary of War under Taft. He continued to reorganize the already started US troops under his adviser, Elihu Root. After the outbreak of World War I, Stimson became part of the readiness movement.
