David Mirkin is an American film and television director, writer and producer. Mirkin grew up in Philadelphia and intended to become an electrical engineer, but abandoned that career path to study film at Loyola Marymount University. After graduating, he became a monologue actor, and then moved on to writing scripts for television. He wrote for the sitcom Three's Company, It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show and acted as host for the Newhart series. After an unsuccessful attempt to remake the British series The Young Ones, Mirkin created Get a Life in 1990. The series starred comedian Chris Elliott and lasted for two seasons, despite the lack of support. humor. He went on to set up the editorial show The Edge with then-co-star actress Julie Brown.
