José Piñera Echenique was a Chilean economist, one of the famous Chicago boys, who served as Minister of Labor and Social Security and Mines, during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He is the architect of Chile's private retirement system based on individual retirement accounts. Piñera has been called "the world's greatest defender of the privatization of the public pension system" as well as the "flute player of pension reform". He is currently an Outstanding Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, a Washington-based liberal thought organization, president of the Santiago-based International Center for Pension Reform, Senior Fellow at the Istituto Italian Institute of Free Thought Bruno Leoni, and member of the advisory board of the Vienna-based Education Initiative for Central and Eastern Europe. He has master's and doctoral degrees. Harvard School of Economics.
