John Wesley Powell
John Wesley Powell is a geologist, American soldier, Western explorer, professor at Wesleyan University in Illinois, and director of major scientific and cultural organizations. He is best known for the Powell Geographic Expedition in 1869, a three-month river cruise on the Green and Colorado Rivers, including the first official US government-sponsored route through the Grand Canyon. Powell was the second director of the US Geological Survey and proposed pre-planned policies for the development of the Arid West to accurately assess its conditions. He became the first director of the Department of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution while he was director of the US Geological Survey, where he supported research and publication in linguistics and sociology.
