Edward Milton Buckner is an American atheist activist who served as president of American Atheists from 2008 to 2010. He succeeded this post from David Silverman. He was Executive Director of the Council for Secular Humanism from 2001 to 2003 and was its Southern Director. As treasurer of the Atlanta Freethought Society, he led a rally at a rally in 2007 organized by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue to pray for rain. Buckner is currently a member of the National Council of Atheists of the United States. Buckner and his son, Michael E. Buckner, wrote In Freedom We Trust: An Atheist Guide to Free Religions published by Prometheus Books in late 2012. Buckner was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to a father is the Pastor Episcopal. He received a BA from Rice University in 1967 and a Masters and Doctorate degree from Georgia State University. Dr. Buckner married his wife Lois Diane Bright Buckner in 1968, and the two gave birth to a child Michael Edward Buckner in 1970 .
