Jeannette Ridlon Piccard war eine amerikanische Heißluftballonspielerin und später eine katholische Priesterin. Sie hält seit fast drei Jahrzehnten den Rekord für weibliche Körpergröße und gilt nach einigen zeitgenössischen Dokumenten als die erste Frau im Weltraum. Piccard war die erste lizenzierte Heißluftballonpilotin in den Vereinigten Staaten und die erste Frau, die in die Stratosphäre flog. In Begleitung ihres Mannes Jean, einem Mitglied der Piccard-Ballonfahrerfamilie und Zwillingsbruder von Auguste Piccard, erreichte sie am 23. Oktober 1934 bei einem Rekordflug über den Eriesee eine Höhe von 17,9 Meilen und behielt die Ballkontrolle für den gesamten Flug. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes im Jahr 1963 war sie mehrere Jahre lang Beraterin des Direktors des Johnson Space Center der NASA, sprach vor der Öffentlichkeit über die Arbeit der NASA und wurde anschließend in die Hall of Fame of Space befördert.
